Rowdy Roddy Piper ….all out of bubble gum

I like to put fun references in my reviews when possible.  My Street Fighter and Mega Man energy drink reviews show this well.  Today’s soda is Rowdy Roddy Piper … all out of bubble gum. This review should be dripping with wrestling references or at least a casual mention of the movie “They Live”.  I’ve never been into wrestling, I have tried a time or two, and I’ve never seen the movie “They Live”. This cuts down considerably on the number of fun parallels I could have made.  Just wanted to forewarn you of what you were about to embark on.

Sitting in front of me is a cold bottle of pink liquid.  Bubble Gum Soda is the flavor listed at the base of this cool container, and that’s not particularly exciting to me.  Bubble gum barely works as a gum flavor in my mind, I’m not sure I appreciate it reaching beyond it’s chewy boundaries. Nonetheless a combination of spring water, cane sugar, citric acid, and some natural/artificial flavors have created the soda version of bubble gum.  Rowdy Roddy Piper stands with shotgun ready behind the script. This seems like it’s at least worth a shot.

The aroma that leaves is certainly that of bubble gum.  I’m also getting a small hint of a cream soda as well. I’m not sure I’d classify it as “vanilla”, but there’s an overt sweetness that differentiates itself from the bubble gum.

As pink as this soda is, and as many times as the label says “bubble gum” (twice) this is far more muted than I was expecting in terms of flavor.  I immediately want you to know that is a good thing in my book. The bubble gum taste is there, but doesn’t fill my mouth with sugary nonsense. I’m able to take in the full flavor and not feel like I’m being bombarded.

Rowdy Roddy Piper ….all out of bubble gum is a fairly smooth drink, but the carbonation keeps it from being lifeless.  The bubbles are small, but relentless along the back of my throat causing a slight burn with their activity. The aftertaste lingers quite a bit.  In fact I’m still tasting it nearly a minute after my last sip. Fortunately the aftertaste is true to the actual taste, so my tongue’s sensibilities aren’t terribly offended.

All in all I’m impressed with this soda.  It’s hard for me to imagine a bubble gum soda scoring top marks with me, but this one is done well enough that I could see enjoying it with a hotdog or hamburger.  I like it when a soda surprises me.

Verdict - Buy a Pack
