PSA: Using a Courtesy Water Cup for Soda is Now a Felony
Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 3:56PM Not saying that any of you readers are into stealing fountain soda, but if you've ever been in a restaurant and asked for an empty cup for water and then used said cup for soda, you got away with a felony.
At least in Florida. A man in a Naples (Florida, not Italy) McDonald's (there is a McDonald's in Naples, Italy. Sigh.) asked for a cup to get some water, but instead used it to get some fountain soda. When asked to pay a dollar for the beverage, he cursed out the manager and refused to leave.
To be fair, stealing a soda in this manner is actually petty theft, but since the accused, Mark Abaire, had previous convictions for theft, what would normally be a petty theft charge was upgraded to a felony. If he's convicted he could face five years in prison.
For stealing a $1 soda.
Best part of the story: his "aliases" include "Red" and "Clown." Ronald would not be amused.
